I’m definitely a little rusty with my programming skills, but I’ve still “got it.” If you want to screw around with a prototype, check this out:

Blair’s Blog of the Future

Step 1 to better blogging: I’ve started to learn about PHP. Dan calls PHP a “miserable pile of ass as far as the language is concerned,” but it looks fine to an abject scripting newbie like me. It feels weird to be learning a language again, over three years after doing any serious coding. And back then I was a CS major programming in Java.

I’m starting to realize the limits of using Blogger’s free services. I increasingly feel the need to write down more than just daily fluff. There are lots of things I want to say, but can’t…because my website is open to the public. It just wouldn’t be prudent to share certain aspects of my life with random coworkers, for example. But what to do? I don’t have the patience to deal with separate blogs, and trying to resync them into one continuous history at some future date would be a nightmare. I know that Blogger offers some solutions but none of them really fit my needs, even the pay services.

I think the ultimate solution will be to homegrow my own script. I have the technical ability (with a few books to help me on my way) but I need the time to sit down and be the computer nerd I was for so long. One of these days…

Ah, Blogger seems to be working for me again. It appears that the system somehow lost my template.

Ugh…Blogger problems have let this page stagnate for two weeks now. Oh well, it’s free and it works most of the time.

I was browsing through someone else’s blog the other day, when it hit me. A lot of people go to much greater depth in their diary entries, to the point where the blog actually reads like a classic diary. I’ve refrained from being quite that intimate, because I know that the world is (potentially and theoretically) watching. I can see the downside, though: Ten years from now, I’d rather be able to read a collection of my deeper thoughts, as opposed to an amalgam of brainfarts-du-jour. Maybe there’s a place for both in this blog.

It just occurred to me that I had no email address on this site. No way for anyone to contact me, ever. Bad Blair! Problem solved.

Ah, I see that a good friend of mine from high school has included me to his list o’ links. Saaaaandler!

Made some changes to the site yesterday. Most notably, I’ve added a cars page with a bunch of broken links on the left side. Give me some time - I’ll get them all working shortly. :-)

Made some ultra-basic tweaks to the template for starters - fonts, colors, etc. I also am attempting to set up archiving. Someone please hand me a free day to really fix it up.
